Madonna dell'Oliveto

This shrine was built at the end of the 16th c. with alms and free work of the faithful, reusing building material from the old monastery of San Vincenzo not far away. The name was given after an event in 1521 when during a flood, the image of the Madonna had to be cut off the wall to be saved and was placed on top of an olive tree. The sandstone sculpture of the Madonna and Child by Ascanio da Cortona, once in a niche outside, has now been placed inside, with a beautiful holy water stoup by the same artist Virgin Enthroned, the painting that gave its name to the church and is probably attributable to the workshop of Caporali. Amongst the other numerous works of art, one should mention the painting by Virgilio Nucci(?) The Virgin Enthroned with Child, an Annunciation and a Miracle of St Francis of Paola, attributed to Salvio Savini.
