Considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Umbrian Renaissance,
this shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built at the end of
the 15th c. and was immediately consecrated by Pope Alexander VI,
following miracles attributed to a mural painting of the Holy Virgin.
Various important works of art have enriched this church
through the centuries: a Madonna of the Rosary by Bernardo di Girolamo
Rosselli, an Assumption of the Virgin by the work-shop of Caporali,
a beautiful Epiphany by Domenico Alfani, and a wooden cross donated
in 1531 by the people of Perugia. The main altar was replaced in
the 18th c. The sandstone façade has sculptures and decorations
by Domenico Bertini da Settignano, "il Topolino" (the small mouse).
The bell-tower dates from after 1810, the year during which the
original collapsed. Artists from Lombardy were involved in the shrine,
their work shows the influence of Bramante, whose style was very
popular in Umbria.mbria.
